How It Helps:

  • Has antibacterial properties

  • Helps strengthen lining of blood vessels and capillaries which in turn helps ease bruising as well as vericose veins

  • Pectin, a type of fiber, helps lower cholesterol levels

  • Grapefruits : Can help regulate red blood cells; Low red blood cell count - anemia ; or high red blood cell count. 

  • Eating grapefruits can help with blood pressure as well as obesity

  • Can help breakdown gallstones (limonene found usually in the peels of citrus fruits)

  • Lime: has antibiotic properties 

  • Oranges: contains properties that help lower blood pressure

  • Contain anti-inflammatory properties

  • Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) helps in preventing colds

  • Eriocitrin a flavonoid (has antioxidant properties) is found only in lemon and lime peels. It is high in antioxidant activity.

Tips & Other Info.

  • When you have a cold make lemon tea, you can add ginger to it as well, or you can add one crushed garlic clove as well as a dash of cinammon and drink. 

  • When making salads or using lemon juice in your salads, add the zest to it too. Wash the lemon with a veggie wash first and then zest it.

  • Although not a lot of people may like this but, the next time you go to eat sushi ask them to slice up some lemons (paper thin slices) and put it on your sushi and eat. Yum!

  • The recommended dietary allowance for vitamin C is more for those who are smokers, for pregnant women, as well as for women who are lactating.

  • When making orange cake, use freshly squeezed orange juice and add some of the zest in there! 

  • For all you sushi lovers.... when your having sushi or a simple roll, ask the chef to slice you some veryyy thin lemon slices. Place it on your sushi/roll and enjoy! Yes eat the whole lemon like that WITH the peel, some extra antioxidants with your sushi :)

Plant during spring (March-May) with loam based soil. The soil pH level for citrus trees should be about 6-7.5. Every 3 to 4 years re-pot container grown citrus trees.
Summer (August) to fall (September-November)
Between winter (February) to spring (March) prune the citrus trees.
Watering: During the winter season (December-February) keep them mostly dry (but not completely). During spring (March-May) when it starts to flower continue watering. Feeding: During the growing season add a feed with high nitrogen and potassium every month.
Full sun
Container grown or in ground. Every 3 to 4 years re-pot container grown citrus trees.
